Massage Modalities & Descriptions

Swedish Massage

The Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massages you can get. It is performed to energize the body and improve overall health. This type of massage involves actions like percussion, kneading, vibration, tapping and rolling. Massage oil or lotion is used to protect the skin from friction.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage therapy isn't just a Swedish massage with deeper strokes or harder pressure. Deep tissue massages use firm pressure and slow strokes to massage deep layers of muscle and fascia, which is the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is focused and systematic, targeting muscles that are used in a specific sport. It uses various techniques to decrease muscle pain and improve recovery, as well as improve overall range of motion and flexibility to support safe and effective movement.

Trigger Point Therapy

The objective of trigger point therapy is releasing or softening a muscle knot to reduce (or eliminate) the knot pain and associated pain. This release happens by applying various levels of pressure to muscle knots, and then stretching the affected areas through a complete range of motion.

Myo-fascial

Myo-fascial (my-o-FASH-e-ul) release is a manual therapy technique that focuses on pain believed to arise from myofascial tissues — the tough membranes that wrap, connect, and support your muscles.

During myofascial release therapy, the therapist locates myofascial areas that feel stiff and fixed instead of elastic and movable under light manual pressure. These areas, though not always near what feels like the source of pain, are thought to restrict muscle and joint movements, which contributes to widespread muscle pain.

The focused manual pressure and stretching used in myofascial release therapy loosen up restricted movement, leading indirectly to reduced pain.

Cupping

Cupping is a form of massage therapy which decompresses soft tissues using vacuum suction, unlike other forms of massage that compresses soft tissues.  During cupping, the cup gently sucks to your skin and lifts underlying soft tissue into the cup.

How does it feel?

Cupping is very relaxing and generally not painful.  The sensation that is experienced is a pulling of the skin as the cup is moved in a rolling fashion.  Redness or a feeling of warmth is usually experienced after the release of the cup due to increased blood flow to the area.

Who can benefit?

Almost anyone can benefit from cupping.  It is used to treat lack of mobility, tight muscles, scars and many diagnoses like headaches, tendinitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, and release of trigger points.

What to expect after treatment?

Mild soreness is to be expected from the buildup of lactic acid in the muscle tissue, but less soreness than a deep tissue massage.  Bruises are to be expected and can last up to a week. Physical exertion and heat are not recommended after the treatment.

Cupping benefits:

Gua-Sha

Gua-sha is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). According to the principles of TCM, your qi (pronounced “chi”), or energy, must flow throughout your body so you can feel your best. When qi becomes stagnant in certain areas, it’s believed that health problems can occur. With gua sha, a practitioner will use a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape areas of your body where there is inflammation, tightness/tension, knots, or scar tissue to help improve circulation and promote healing.

Gua-sha tools have smooth, rounded edges. They’re not going to cut, stab or pinch you. Before performing gua sha, the treatment area will get massaged with cream or lotion first, to find the tense tissue. Then the area is worked on gently and gradually to build up the intensity to promote circulation to help break up the areas that are all twisted up.

Body Tempering

Body Tempering is a cutting-edge technique that involves controlled pressure applied to muscles using specialized tools. This method promotes flexibility, enhances circulation, and provides tension relief, offering a holistic approach to optimal physical condition.
